A poorly made frame is the most dangerous defect in an electric tricycle. Unlike cosmetic issues, frame failures can cause accidents. Here's what to check before placing orders.
Material Grade
Quality frames use high-carbon steel or chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Ask suppliers for material certificates. The steel grade should be clearly marked. Lower-grade steel may look identical but will corrode faster and crack under stress.
Welding Quality
Inspect weld joints closely. Good welds are uniform, smooth, and consistent. Look for signs of porosity (tiny holes), undercutting, or uneven bead width. Robot-welded frames generally offer more consistency than manual welding.
Surface Treatment
Electrophoretic coating (E-coating) provides the best rust protection. Powder coating is a good alternative. Paint-only finishes are inadequate for markets with humid or coastal climates. Ask for salt-spray test results — quality frames should pass 500+ hours.
Load Testing
Request load test reports. A quality frame should withstand at least 2x the rated load without permanent deformation. If a supplier cannot provide test data, consider it a red flag.
