Brake Systems: Drum vs Disc — What Your Customers Need

When specifying electric tricycles for different markets, brake selection should never be an afterthought. The right braking system depends on terrain, weather, and expected load.

Drum Brakes

Drum brakes are enclosed, protecting them from dust and water. They require less frequent adjustment and are common in rear-wheel braking setups. Best for flat terrain and dry climates. Lower cost but less stopping power in wet conditions.

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes offer superior stopping power, especially in wet or dusty conditions. They dissipate heat better and provide more consistent performance. Essential for hilly terrain and rainy climates. Slightly higher maintenance but significantly safer.

Recommended Configuration

For most markets, we recommend front disc + rear drum as the minimum. For hilly or rainy regions, specify dual disc brakes. Always ensure brake pads meet local safety standards.
