Controller Quality: The Component Most Importers Overlook

The controller is the brain of an electric tricycle, yet it receives far less attention than motors or batteries during procurement. This oversight leads to warranty claims and customer dissatisfaction.

What a Controller Does

The controller regulates power from the battery to the motor, manages speed settings, provides overload protection, and handles regenerative braking (if equipped). A quality controller ensures smooth acceleration and protects the entire electrical system.

Quality Indicators

Look for: MOSFET quality (branded components like IRFP260), conformal coating on circuit boards (protects against moisture and dust), proper heat sinks, and waterproof enclosures rated IP65 or higher.

Common Failures

Overheating is the number one cause of controller failure. Ensure the controller is rated for continuous current (not just peak current) that matches your motor. Undersized controllers will overheat and fail prematurely.
